As a sufferer of hyperparathyroidism for 6 years with nearly all of the possible
symptoms, I am writing a blog where I talk about what the symptoms of
hyperparathyroidism feel like, and how hyperparathyroidism is often
underdiagnosed because of the overlap of symptoms with other conditions. I will
give you advice on how to stand up for yourself to get yourself a doctor that
will take your health seriously and test for it!
Hyperparathyroidism (aka Parathyroid Disease) affects many people who have been diagnosed with ailments such as Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Migraine, Acid Reflux, Ulcers, and Arthritis. I know because over the course of 6 years, I was told by doctors that I might have each of these conditions. The reason why underdiagnosis of hyperparathyroidism is common is because the excess calcium in the body that results from a parathyroid tumor (or tumors or hyperplasia) causes symptoms that are shared by all of these conditions.
If Calcium is High, Ask Your Doctor to Test PTH. If He or She Won't, Get a New Doctor!
Many doctors were instructed to believe that calcium levels are not a problem unless they are above 12 mg/dL. Also, doctors may be looking for cancer, which often does present with high calcium levels. Nevertheless, most of those who have hyperparathyroidism have calcium levels that are between 9.75 mg/dL and 11.75 mg/dL. After many years of symptoms, I have had numerous doctors tell me that my slightly elevated calcium levels were "not a problem." After doing my own research and specifically asking one doctor to test my PTH levels, she said that the calcium level was nothing to be worried about. If you think you might have this condition, you have to be a very active patient! Many doctors do not understand that a person can have hyperparathyroidism with "high normal" to "slightly elevated" calcium levels. If you see your calcium levels in this range and have the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism, forcefully ask that you have your PTH levels tested. If your doctor will not test for it, find another doctor who will. That is what I did and I eventually got the diagnosis.

DeleteI believe I have this but my family is unsure and my doctor will think I'm crazy more than likely. I have depression/anxiety, IBS, chronic headaches, muscle/joint pain, arms/legs fall asleep and tingle, I'm constantly tired and want to nap even if I sleep all day, I'm an A B student and I have some Ds, I cannot remember things at all, and my throat has been sore for three weeks despite being on antibiotics. I so have allergies-seasonal/med/skin, and endometriosis. I'm 17 years old. I think this could be the answer, what do you think?

Same here. Had kidney stones, as well as all of the above symptoms. Had the surgery in June to remove one of the parathyroid glands, and everything was okay until now. Now I am experiencing a LOT of the same symptoms, but increased dizziness too.

I believe that if your calcium level is borderline high or high, you need to ask the doctor to do a PTH test. If negative, you can still have Primary Hyperparathyroidism. This is what happened to me. I trusted the doctors (primary and endocrinologist) and they did nothing so I just waited. The calcium kept creeping up a little every few years. I had these severe fatigue symptoms and inability to sleep through the night. Kept having to urinate often. AFter 8 years, another doctor asked me what I was going to do about this calcium and I eventually contacted the Normal Parathyroid Center in Tampa Florida. They will evaluate your tests (calcium and PTH) and will tell you what they think. They said that I had primary hyperparathyroid tumor. So I changed my insurance (I had HMO) and they gave me another diagnosis. I went to Florida and had what looks like a pretty large parathyroid adenoma removed. If you suspect you have this disease, then go to other doctors. Many won't know how to treat this disease. I recommend UCLA or Norman Parathyroid Center. Do something immediately and don't let them just leave you to get sicker and sicker. I got sicker and sicker until I could hardly get out of bed from fatigue, weakness, abdominal pains, leg cramps, muscle weakness, etc, etc. Living with this disease can kill you early in life. Go to the Normal Parathyroid Center and read their website and educate yourself on this disease. I did this and it saved my life. I feel so much better. I can't believe that right after surgery for the tumor, I felt JOY. This disease messes up your hormones too.

ReplyDeleteBest way to find out is to have your PTH and calcium levels checked.Levels of both can fluctuate. My calcium was in high range of normal but my PTH was almost always elevated. It was hard finding an endocrinologist to treat me. Finally, after 9 years with this, I am to have surgery soon to remove the adenoma on one of my parathyroid glands. DeleteI have been bedridden for almost seven month now, because of daily waves of severe dizziness, ear pain and tinnitus, that has totally destroyed my life! I have Hashimotos and back in January (shortly before my symptoms began) the hospital took my PTH - witch was elevated! but it didn't seem to worry them, and it hasn't been measured since. In my desperate search for similar symptoms it has been on my mind though, but I haven't been able to find ANY connection between ear pain/tinnitus and hyperparathyroidism.

I have been diagnosed. Apparently high calcium, high PTH, and lower levels of Vitamin D pretty much means you have it. Let me say - you have to read up about it and advocate for yourself. There are a lot of doctors who want to give you meds and "watch what happens" when in fact the only way to cure it is have the surgery.
ReplyDeleteEventually this illness will shorten your life with bone, heart, or kidney problems so push, push, push for treatment before it gets to that point. There is evidence that as you age you become less of a candidate for surgery - I guess other problems crop up - so push from the outset to get real, permanent, treatment. Doctors seem to want to keep you testing and medicating the symptoms rather than get to the root cause. Also pick a good, experienced surgeon. It can be a minimally invasive procedure but the glands lie behind the thyroid, close to your nerves surrounding the voice box. A good surgeon will check all four glands because sometimes a person can have more than one tumor. Please consider any treatments coming out of a bottle as palitative and short-term. Eventually you will need surgery and why put off the inevitable? The guys in Florida who operate the parathyroid website make their money out of patients who get nowhere with doctors in their home town. They say they have never had a patient with the disease who has lived beyond 25 years. This disease slowly kills you while robbing you of the quality of life you deserve. Anyone reading this - please advocate for yourself! Good luck.
I am 37 year old and for past few One year I am having frequent urination,IBS ,weight loss, blurry vision ,seeing floaters ,having star burst at night when seeing lights. Also I am getting nervous ,depressed with paranoid thoughts ,getting irritated easily.I checked my blood calcium levels and it was high and then I coaxed my GP to test my PTH level thanks to my exposure to parathyroid.com which proved it is very high almost 90 and then it started varying. Also my Alkaline Phosphatase was high and my Vitamin D is decreasing. I am now being referred to an endocrinologist who will do bone density scan and another round of test. It is so hard to get a specialist in Denmark. I am really having muscle problems in my eyes get drowsy all the time. Hopefully the doctors will help me cure my glands.

ReplyDeleteI have been having recently high 10.1 and 10.4 calcium levels, and gastroparesis, I also have diabetes that is uncontrollable by insulin, cannot take insulin at all. I have neck pain, one floater and when I eat anything with calcium I get really sick, dizzy and nausea. I have tried to get doctors to check my pth but to no avail, I did pay for a pth test myself and it was normal but according to parathyroid.com pth is not always high. I need help....

DeleteI was just diagnosed on Tuesday by the surgeons who operate parathyroid.com. My surgery is in a week and a half. My PTH has been what is called inappropriately normal at 41 and 51. (Calcium of 10.7 and 10.5 respectively.) It should be close to zero if your calcium is even a little bit high. I also get sick (nausea, extreme fatigue) when eating calcium, and I have a TON of other symptoms. Please contact Dr. Norman and get a consultation ASAP!

ReplyDeleteon march 8 i had a ultrasound of my cartoid arteries in my neck at which time they found a nodule in my thyroid, when they did a actual thyroid ultrasound they found a parathyroid adenoma. over several years i have had all the exact symptoms you describe. sometimes i felt like i was going out of my mind because of the aching bones, aching back, blurred vision, tingling sensations among many others. i am now waiting for my dr to call me to see what happens next. i just got these results yesterday.

I was recently diagnosed with Hyperparathyroidism. It just so happens that my wife had been diagnosed earlier. My wife had higher Calcium levels, higher blood pressure, and lower vitamin D than me. So our doctor caught hers because it was more extreme, but I feel he should have caught mine. My cardiologist also missed the signs.
ReplyDeleteMy Calcium was in the 10-2 - 10.8 range over a couple of years. My blood pressure was borderline high, but I'm on HBP meds and I also loss 120 pounds and my blood pressure didn't change. I also spend a lot of time in the sun and was taking D supplements, so that explains my "normal" levels of vitamin D.
I have been diagnosed and am to have surgery in a couple of weeks to remove nodule. Aside from fatigue Ibam wondering if it will help with migraine and light sensitivity I have suffered with.
ReplyDeleteI have been asking for diagnosis for years. I've known about Norman site for years, and have read everything on it. Unfortunately, I can't afford to go there. I have about 3/4 of the symptoms in the original post. High PTH, high end Calcium, low D. I pushed for years, had 2 sestamibi scans, both showing nothing. Finally, this year, I insisted and saw an endo surgeon who said nothing there but she can do exploratory if I want. Its been a few months, but I'm going to say yes, please. If my insurance will cover it. Sicker every day. No joy in life. Dizzy every time I stand and forget about walking. I can no longer work.

ReplyDeleteI've had every single one of those symptoms. For over 7 years I've gone to over 50 (!) different doctors - the gamut from shrinks to neurologists, rheumatologists, cardiologists, primary doctors with all of these symptoms, had so many tests done from MRI's, CT's had every known blood test EXCEPT PTH. Feeling worse and worse being told it's all in my head, going from depression to suicide ideation, not being able to function at all - spending most of my time in a recliner, I finally hit the search button with all of my test results (which including calcium of 10.1) and the symptoms (including hematuria, bone pain, insomnia, depression and more) and found that the only test that wasn't done was the PTH. So I asked to be tested - primary doctor went ahead and ordered it - and it came back high. So then I knew there was an actual reason for feeling this bad. Test after test came back low vitamin D, low phosphorus, high calcium and high PTH.
ReplyDeleteWhat unnerves me the most right now how is that throughout all of this ordeal which included 34 (!) visits to ER's due to arrhythmias - including SVT's, that nobody put the pieces together and said, *you know what, this sure looks like hyperparathyroidism*. So now I am basically waiting for the final tests - endocrinologists ordered DEXA, ionized calcium (high) and 24 hour urine, still waiting for results to then consider going ahead with a SESTIMIBI scan. Ultrasounds did not find anything.
I've been given so many labels, been told I need to see a psychiatrist too many times to count. I just stopped caring. In order to self-regulate I'm spending my time gathering energy to get chores done. Then basically collapse and rest some more. This has gone on as I wrote for over 7 years and progressingly it's worse. I've tried so many remedies - just to keep the organism going and to alleviate the symptoms. That's all I had to say.
